Vitamin C Vs. Covid-19

What is Covid-19

The World Health Organization (WHO), described coronaviruses as a range of viruses that exists as a family and are responsible for illnesses which include; common cold, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The Coronaviruses were majorly found in animals. Subsequently, human beings started contracting it from these animals. An example of this is the - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) was contracted by human beings from cats while the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) was contracted by human beings from certain kinds of camel. There are other kinds of coronaviruses that have not yet passed to human beings but still live in animals.

In December 2019, China recorded its first outbreak of the Corona Virus in Wuhan, Hubei. That gave birth to the name COVID-19.  The World Health Organization called it a 'pandemic'. As of now, there have been about 576,000 cases and climbing of the COVID-19 in over 190 countries of the world.

Symptoms of  Covid-19

According to WHO, many persons that are infected with the Corona Virus, tend to experience mild symptoms and illnesses that have to do with the respiratory organs and they get well without having to go through unique medical care.

People with underlying illnesses like – diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, asthma, cancer, etc. may easily develop a critical medical condition when infected with this deadly virus.

However, to prevent this virus, one needs to be properly informed. People should ensure that they are familiar with the possible causes and symptoms.

Here, are some of the ways you can protect yourself in this ongoing pandemic:

  • Wash your hands as frequently as possible with soap and water.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer on your palms immediately after being in public places.
  • Resist the urge to touch your face.
  • Protect your body by getting plenty of rest, exercise, eating a well balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and boosting your immune system.

Vitamin C – The Benefits and How it Can be Used as a preventative for COVID-19

Vitamin C  is an ascorbic acid that contains safe and healthy nutrients for the body. It also acts as an antioxidant to the body. Experts say that it’s also one of the most effective means of alleviating the common cold. Vitamin C is known to protect and boost the immune system against cardiovascular diseases, eye diseases, and prenatal problems.

The ascorbic acid is known for its several health benefits which include:

  • Cold: Vitamin C helps to fight against the common cold. Regular intake of the vitamin can help prevent the occurrence of lung infections and severe cases of pneumonia.
  • Helps in body development, repairs body tissues, and aids growth
  • Protects us from free radicals which lead to health conditions like; heart diseases and cancer
  • Reduces chances of wrinkles, dry skin and helps the skin’s elasticity.

Vitamin C as a Treatment for Corona Virus

In a bid to find a treatment for the deadly pandemic, a hospital in New York has identified Vitamin C as a possible cure for COVID. As of the 26th of March 2020, it's been confirmed that some hospitals in New York have administered large doses of Vitamin C  to the COVID patients in their intensive unit. Reports also have it that patients who initially tested positive to the virus were treated with Vitamin C and some other vitamins which caused their health to be restored.

To treat this virus, the vitamin C was administered through the veins, in a very high dosage that exceeds the daily recommended dosage. The recommendation by the National Institute of Health is 90 milligrams for men and 75 milligrams for women.

Vitamins like; Vitamin A and D that are fat-soluble, can be very harmful to health if administered in high dosage. This is not the case with vitamin C since it can be excreted easily.

Professor of biochemistry, Peter McCaffery said that Vitamin C is safe when used under medical supervision. That said, we can agree that the effectiveness of vitamin C as a treatment for COVID-19 is relatively proven medically.

Because of its efficacy in curing the common cold which is one of the major symptoms of COVID,  vitamin C holds a major function in healing the body of this virus. It protects your body cells against free radicals, which are commonly ingested from cigarette smoke, air pollution, and consuming fried foods.

Scientific studies have looked at the effectiveness of vitamin C against the common cold. Some cases of common cold were as a result of a virus that crept out from the Coronavirus family.

Following the recent successful results from China concerning curing patients of COVID-19 with vitamin c, a Long Island-based pulmonologist and critical-care specialist with North Wealth, Dr. Andrew Welber, talked about how he started administering Vitamin C to his patients at the intensive-care unit at the dosage of 1,500 milligrams.

He shared that the patients are being given high doses of the ascorbic acid at most three to four times each day. He also explained that the dosage is 16 times more than the recommended dosage by the National Institute of Health. The routine is solely done on the basis of the experiments done in Shanghai, China to cure patients of the COVID -19.

Dr. Welber also stated that all the patients who were given vitamin C responded to treatments better than their counterparts that were not given the antioxidant.

According to a Northwell spokesman, Jason Molinet, Vitamin C is used widely as a treatment for the Coronavirus throughout the health system. Molinet noted that the amount administered to patients is usually not the same.
